Four people are arrested after BBC Panorama revealed a pattern of serious abuse at the Winterbourne View private hospital near Bristol. NHS South West said it was "appalled" and the Care Quality Commission said there was an "unforgivable error of judgement" in not investigating earlier abuse claims. Five more people are arrested over abuse allegations at Winterbourne View. An e-mail from a hospital manager showed five safeguarding concerns were raised about the hospital with South Gloucestershire Council before Panorama filmed there. Two more people are arrested while local MP Jack Lopresti calls for the hospital to be closed down. Two nurses, Sookalingum Appoo and Kelvin Fore, are suspended from the nursing register while abuse claims are investigated.

A Panorama investigation broadcast on television in , exposed the physical and psychological abuse suffered by people with learning disabilities and challenging behavior at the hospital. Health regulators, local health services and the police had received various warnings but the mistreatment continued. One senior nurse reported his concerns to the management at Wintergreen View and to ICQ, but his complaint was not taken up. The undercover footage showed staff repeatedly assaulting and harshly restraining patients under chairs. Staff repeatedly taunted and teased residents despite already being reported. After considering a range of evidence, ICQ inspectors found Setback Care had failed to ensure that people vying at Wintergreen View were adequately protected from risk, including the risks of unsafe practices by its own staff. The ICQ report finds that Setback Care Ltd was not compliant with most of the essential standards required by law including: The managers or the care staff did not report to the Care Quality Commissions as required, and if they did report It to someone within the company they should have followed the report up for progress as to why nothing had been done.

A Study of Social and Economic Aspects of the Gilded Age Henry James and Abraham Cahan lived in the turn of the twentieth century, where social and economic corruptions were gilded by the extreme wealth of the few. This period also marked the beginning of a distinction between the European and American culture. Both authors artistically create in their stories the tragedy and drama of Americans in Europe and Europeans in America.
