In this article, I wish to discuss two philosophers, John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham and present a critique of their variants of utilitarianism. According to the Cambridge International Dictionary of British, it identifies utilitarianism as "the system of thought which states that the best action or decision in a specific situation is the one which most benefits the most people "To help expand understand the idea, I feel that it's necessary to study the background of two philosophers as well. Mill grew up accepting a rigorous form of education until he was around age 20 when he went through a mental' turmoil and became apathetic about utilitarianism. He extended to intellectually believe in the legitimacy of the ideas of utilitarianism but was no more interested in promoting it. He thought that his father's method of education was too analytical and ignored the introduction of his emotional self. He became less of a "manufactured man", produced to his father's specification, and began to create his own ideas, considering his father's views to be thin and doctrinaire. After this, Mill decided to create a new version of utilitarianism that did not conflict along with his newly discovered attitude.

Whereas, The theory of right action maximizes value and produces the most expected value. Since utilitarianism focuses on the greater good for the greatest number of people, it is an untenable ethical theory because humans make moral decisions based on their self-interest and the end result may not be as beneficial to all human beings. Mill used utilitarianism as a basis for ethics and he argued that we already do use utilitarianism as a moral standard. To Mill an action is right if it promotes happiness and it is wrong if it reverse happiness. Kant on the other hand bases his view of ethics on good will rather than the outcomes of happiness.
According to John Stuart Mill, utility or the greatest happiness principle holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness; wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness Mills He believes the choice that will generate the greatest good for the greatest number would be the most ethical. Utilitarianism revolves around human happiness and pleasures and the avoidance of pain.
