Major news outlets including National Public Radio Musiker, , Time magazine McLaughlin, , and the New York Times Halweil, have featured biodynamic agriculture or biodynamics as the newest version of organic agriculture. With the high visibility and promotion of biodynamic products such as wines Smith and Barquin, , farmers and gardeners alike are increasingly interested in biodynamics as an alternative agricultural practice. Extension educators and Master Gardener volunteers who receive questions from curious clients on the topic need science-based answers—the focus of this literature review. Biodynamics is an agricultural management system based on a series of lectures given by Rudolf Steiner in Steiner, Over his lifetime, Steiner became concerned with the degradation of food produced through farming practices that increasingly relied on additions of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides.

A review of literature was conducted to summarize the research and development of systems designed to collect mass-flow and yield data of hay and forage in windrowers, forage ha,vesters, and balers. One requirement of extension personnel who write articles for either popular or refereed journals is that we always bow to the findings of supported research, not just political or personal opinion. When I sat down to write this piece on harvester maintenance, the first article in my literature review was an excellent piece done in this same magazine in May by Josef Berger and Gerhard Gisol. I hope you will reference that piece focusing on knife maintenance, as it is well-written and accurate.
Despite being some of the most important crops globally, there has been limited research on forages when compared with cereals, fruits, and vegetables. This review summarizes the literature highlighting the significance of forage crops, the current improvements and some of future directions for improving yield and nutritional quality. We make the point that the knowledge obtained from model plant and grain crops can be applied to forage crops. The timely development of genomics and bioinformatics together with genome editing techniques offer great scope to improve forage crops.
