Some books are flashes in the pan, read for entertainment and then left on a bus seat for the next lucky person to pick up and enjoy, forgotten by most after their season has passed. Others stick around, are read and re-read, are taught and discussed. Of course, hindsight can also distort the senses; the canon looms and obscures. Though the books on these lists need not be American in origin, I am looking for books that evoke some aspect of American life, actual or intellectual, in each decade—a global lens would require a much longer list. Head here for the s , 20s , and 30s.

Critical Essays (Orwell) - Wikipedia

Animal Farm is an allegorical novella by George Orwell , first published in England on 17 August Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon. According to Orwell, the fable reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. In a letter to Yvonne Davet, Orwell described Animal Farm as a satirical tale against Stalin " un conte satirique contre Staline " , [7] and in his essay " Why I Write " , wrote that Animal Farm was the first book in which he tried, with full consciousness of what he was doing, "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole". Orwell wrote the book between November and February , when the United Kingdom was in its wartime alliance with the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany , and the British intelligentsia held Stalin in high esteem, a phenomenon Orwell hated.

Analysis Of Arthur Koestler's Darkness At Noon

A decade of political chaos shaped George Orwell's vision of a totalitarian future, writes David Aaronovitch. The last is actually a clue as to the absence of the first. My parents were Communists. To them Orwell was on the other side of politics - someone whose principal writings were hostile to them and what they wanted to achieve. This suspicious animosity had lasted beyond the death of Orwell and the demise of Stalin, and into the period when British Communists, by and large, now held the same view of the Soviet Union under Uncle Joe that Orwell had held and that had motivated him to write both Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

When you ask for somebody to grind a nib into any form of Italic, you then have to hold your breath, waiting for what might come in the post! But I can see how Martin shaped the nib, and am confident to leave any other nibs in his care.
