The identification of plants by conventional keys is complex, time consuming, and due to the use of specific botanical terms frustrating for non-experts. This creates a hard to overcome hurdle for novices interested in acquiring species knowledge. Today, there is an increasing interest in automating the process of species identification. These masks, stored and labeled in small cupboards in the atrium of the Roman house and paraded at funerals first of the deceased and then of his relatives who had died earlier , were potent symbols of power both in their own right and in relation to a rich iconography of other prestigious items.
